3. Character Information II
Age/Appearance: Early to mid forties. About 5'9" with black hair and brown eyes. Stout athletic build.
History: http://stargate.wikia.com/wiki/Everett_Young
This is an alternate universe version of Everett Young, in which he has the power of Technopathy. Where this deviates from canon, is at first in subtle ways. Young's power had remained dormant until his introduction to Destiny and a subsequent head injury. At first, he was only peripherally aware of this power. It was written off as lack of sleep and stress causing a strange headache. Due to the sheer amount of technology aboard the ship in need of repair, his brain had trouble sorting the information. Instead it left a chaotic mess in the back of his brain.
It wasn't until the episode Trial and Error(2.06) that his ability was fully triggered. Destiny already possessed advanced capability in interfacing with the minds of its crew. When it took a special interest in him, his power was kicked into full gear. Events up to that point play out nearly identically to canon until the end of that episode. His power was now fully activated, even after Rush turned off the simulation that was slowly driving him insane. A constant flow of information from the ship poured in to his mind in a form of deafening background 'noise'. At first, it was bearable and he returned to command. His mind began to unconsciously trigger further simulation dreams. The events of The Greater Good (2.07) play out several dozen times in multiple variations in simulation in his mind. By the end of that, he is no longer able to distinguish reality from simulation. He was soon confined to quarters and relieved from command but the dreams continued. His canon point is around the events of Malice (2.08). During that time, he was no longer in command. He was still directly connected with the ship and was able to open the doors to his room with his powers because he heard gunfire. In contrast to canon events, he also ends up on the planet and on the hunt for Simeon. At this point, he's certain it's no longer a simulation because he's too far from Destiny, but prior to these events the ship ran him through a series of simulations that dealt with Simeon. As a result, Young isn't interested in taking Simeon alive either. Events still end with Simeon dead though both Young and Rush are involved in his death.
Personality:
Much of Young's personality is very similar to the canon version but there are key differences. Especially after his power is triggered. He begins to continually doubt his own judgment while in command. While previously he had been sure of his decisions, he became increasingly convinced any decision he made would be the wrong one. With effort, he can still be decisive but only with his own life or with saving lives. The bottom line, he no longer trusts himself to command. He believes the best thing for everyone is for him not to be in a leadership position. He knows his grip on reality is compromised and the last thing he wants to see happen is have that cost another life.
He had always been the type of man who would lay down his life for the people under his command. He is willing to do anything he needed to do to see to the safety of those around him. He has the capacity to be ruthless and uncompromising when he thinks it's necessary - this aspect of himself is less apparent after his power activates. On the flip side, he can see the virtue of compromise and understanding but also understands it's not something he's especially good at.
The majority of the time his demeanor is subdued. He thinks before he speaks, more so now that his power is fully activated. He needs to be certain what the reality is before he acts. He believes that remaining calm and thinking it through in any situation will help in the outcome. However, he has trouble following his own advice. He has a keen understanding of what is right and what should be done in many situations but when lets his emotions take hold, it blurs the lines of right and wrong. Those lines have become further blurred with his power. In the countless simulations, he acted in ways he never would before. Going so far as killing Rush in several simulations. He has a great deal of guilt over the things he's done in the simulations in hopes for a better outcome. Rush was not the only life he took in the course of the simulations. He already carried a great deal of guilt over his mercy killing of Riley so the events of the simulations do not help matters in the least.
His personal life is in shambles and is his own fault. It's partly what help trigger the first interface with the ship. His wife on earth served him divorce papers and after that things simply just started to fall apart. It was the last straw in a long line of losses. Where he once had this strong outward facade, it quickly crumbled away under the pressure of command.
Personality REVISION-
What remains of canon is largely his protective nature. The almost suicidal selflessness when it comes to saving a life. In fact, it is enhanced in a lot of ways because he views his power as a detriment. He had to step down from command and be confined because of it so he thinks the only thing he's good for now is canon fodder.
How he views the world has changed a great deal. What's a simulation or a hallucination is very difficult to determine. He deals with it in two ways... when he can't tell which is which he acts far more cautiously and often times refuses to make any major decisions. Through the simulations he's been conditioned that his decisions are either always wrong or will be ineffective. What was just a slight doubt before has become crippling self doubt. He will essentially freeze up in most situations where before he would be decisive, even if his choice may be wrong.
The other way deals with it is when he's certain it is a simulation he completely stops caring what happens around him. This presents a problem though as he is not always right in his assessment of a simulation verses reality. So while in the real world he will sometimes act almost catatonic and simply wait for the 'simulation' to end. If long enough time passes and he realizes it might actually be reality he behavior will change to be a little more interactive with the world around him. Such as speaking to people and taking care of himself.
There are times that he's just had enough of the constant not knowing what is real and what is not and he'll act out in ways he never would before. Like suddenly deciding to do whatever he wanted and act destructively because through the countless simulations he's been shown his actions are of no consequence. So he might as well do whatever he likes. He still has a little bit of restraint there, but not much.
Now, he can still be driven to action under the right conditions. It has to be a big enough deal and an abrupt threat that he hasn't faced before. Essentially, he has to act on instinct. His instincts are to save lives and disregard his own. It needs to be the sort of situation where he doesn't have time to think. If he has time to think about it he'll often do nothing.
He's mostly plagued with the 'why bother' mindset since he's been trained to believe anything he does won't help. In that mindset, he is often self destructive. If he has access to alcohol he will get drunk. He will get very drunk. He'll often resort to drinking when he's continually confronted with decisions that could cost lives. In a very odd sort of way, it does help him actually make a decision but is rarely a beneficial decision.
While in canon, he often had trouble sleeping. This Young avoids sleep. If he does sleep it's because his body decided to abruptly shut down because he's been awake too long. It's a fear of sleep because that's when the simulations happen. If he forces himself to stay awake, part of him thinks then he'll know what is real and what is not. Staying awake does little to help, it only puts more stress on his body and mind. He still attempts this method anyway, largely because he doesn't want to see whatever horrible scenario that will play out when he sleeps.
Additionally, because of the main themes of these simulations... He literally isn't sure who is alive or dead in his universe anymore. In a particularly dark chapter of these simulations he killed many members of the crew with his own hands. He soon became convinced that certain people where dead when in reality they were not or that they've become infected with an alien entity. Obviously this helped prompt him being locked up. He does take some solace in being locked up because he knows he can't hurt anyone that way. There is a down side however, it makes his behavior more erratic. When he thinks he can't hurt anyone, he acts out more violently in relation to simulations. When he's convinced it's a simulation and it's actually reality it can be very dangerous. This often results in self harm like beating on the walls. Then the rare occasions the ship gives him a hallucination rather than a simulation. He will essentially fight with nothing which usually ends badly.
Now, in taking him out of contact with the ship and firmly in reality. Things change a little bit. He is actually worse than he is when he knows he's running through simulations. When things are suddenly real for certain. He becomes more indecisive than before. Now his decisions have very real consequences that could end just as badly as any simulation. He retreats from any situation he may be forced to make a life and death decision. As I said before, the lasting effect of the simulations is that they've conditioned him to think his decisions are always wrong or ineffectual. He can't quite function as a normal person anymore because of this. You really can call it a phobia. He will literally freeze up. He can still make little decisions like what to eat, where to sleep and things like that. But anything major that pops up results in this kind of fear and doubt that keep him from action.
He has a deep loathing for his power. He thinks it ruined his life and he's partially correct. With time, he could learn to use and control this power but as of right now it is completely out of control. He just wants it to go away so he can have some sort of normalcy again.
Sexual Preferences/Orientation: Young has an obvious preference for women. He has a clear problem being faithful to his partner and cheated on his wife at least once(With a woman under his command.). He's a bit compulsive with sex, in that if he feels a connection to someone he'll often follow through. He still put his command first aboard Destiny, though he does still feel something for TJ. After his power activates, sex is often the far from his mind with too much other input clogging his thoughts.
Powers: Technopathy. Generally, his power manifests as a strange intuition regarding machines and other technology. He'll have a feeling when something needs to be repaired. However, his power manifests differently with each type of technology.
Modern Technology It's strangely second nature. He just needs to touch a computer or other device then he can tell you what's wrong with it. Even if he doesn't even understand what he's saying. This the most agreeable of all technologies, it rarely causes him headaches and is often silent unless broken.
Alien Technology Screeches at him. It's not in a language his brain can understand. He can eventually understand it but it takes a great deal of time and effort. Prolonged exposure to advanced alien technology can drive him insane.
Ancient Technology Instantly interfaces with him whether he wants it to or not. The connection manifests itself in several ways: dreams/nightmares where the technology tries to communicate possible outcomes, hallucinations that actively communicate with him, headache inducing infodumps on various systems, and with some effort he can control minor systems such as doors.
Advanced Technology Depending on the type of advanced technology it often interfaces with him in much the same way as Ancient Technology.
Reason for playing: I want to experiment with this AU version of the character. The looser grip on reality has always interested me. I always found his character interesting before and this should give me a chance to explore parts of his psyche that aren't normally present in canon. I choose BN because... I always app here. But more seriously, it offers plenty of opportunity to explore his character more.
World History: What kind of world is your character from? This part can be short, but it must focus on the particular character's context. What was their world like, from their point of view?
Character History: Let us have a summary of the highlights, the turning points of your character's history. What was it that made them who they are?

First-Person: (5-10 sentences)
I've gone through it so many times now. I don't even know who is alive or dead. I thought I killed him then the next time I close my eyes he's alive again.
I'm not even sure this is real. Every time I think I know what reality is, I just... wake up.
Third-Person: (200 words minimum)
At first, Young thought this was just another all too real simulation. Realization hit soon after gating to the planet that this was very real. The mental 'noise' of Destiny was gone. Still, it was easy to doubt this was reality. Especially when it appeared it would have just as bleak an outcome as one of the simulations.
He leaned against one of the shaped rocks of the small canyon. He had to focus if he was going to do this. He could 'feel' the kino remote in Rush's hand next to him. Now he just needed to 'feel' for the other one. It took him a few seconds but he began to get a directional feel for it. He closed his eyes and tried to visualize a map of the area. Rush was getting restless next to him which did little help his concentration.
“Come on,” he muttered to himself. He could 'feel' the other remote. He just needed to pinpoint it but how was he supposed to get an idea of distance if he barely understood what he was doing? Then it happened, like a flash in his mind. He tore the remote from Rush's hands and input the coordinates to the map.
“There,” he said and shoved the remote back at Rush.
Third-Person #2: (200 words minimum)
Young wasn't even sure how long he'd been locked away. Time lost meaning when he repeated the same events in his mind every time he closed his eyes. The most recent subject dealt with his possible release from confinement. It was a mind bending simulation within a simulation scenario. It felt to him like the ship was trying to torture him.
It would start with them judging him to be sane enough to be let out of confinement. He wouldn't return to command but he wasn't forced to remain in his room either. The first few times he nearly fell for it and let himself hope that maybe this nightmare was over. Then it would kick in its new simulation of new threat coming through the gate and on to Destiny. It didn't make sense. Why would it continue to do this if he wasn't in command?
He wasn't even sure how many times he went through this particular simulation before chose much more selfish path. TJ's quarters. A small part of him marveled that it got her smell right. Every little detail he could think of but then this was within his own mind, wasn't it?
It didn't go well at first but the fact he knew it was just in his head made him say everything he'd never say. It wasn't long before it turned into wordless release of tension. Everything about it felt right. All the little details were right. The little sounds she made when he shifted just right. Even the little growl she'd give when she'd suddenly decide she needed to be on top.
For a few sweet moments he was willing to believe this was real.
Then the sounds of the doors opening brought the whole thing crashing down, waking him from another simulation.
