Character Name: Colonel Everett Young
Series: Stargate Universe
Age: 40
Taken from: Near the end of Incursion Part 2(s01e20).
What does his/her journal look like? A kino ball. Basically, a floating camera ball with a small remote to control it.
Skills and abilities: U.S. Air Force training, specificity in special forces. He is a capable pilot for both Earth based air craft and the shuttles aboard Destiny. He's skilled in military strategy and tactics. He is also a capable leader, though his leadership skills are often put to the test. In keeping with his military background, he is proficient is most forms of firearms as well as C4.
Personality:
Young is a responsible, compulsive and flawed individual. He's a man striving to do what in right despite not always knowing what the right thing is. His good intentions often become blurred by what is necessary for the survival of the men and women under his command and those they've sworn to protect. He has the capacity to be ruthless and uncompromising when he thinks it's necessary to protect the lives of his people. On the flip side, he can see the virtue of compromise and understanding but also understands it's not something he's especially good at.
When in a command/leadership position he puts the safety and interests of the people he leads above his own. He views their safety as paramount, while he was in command of Icarus Base and later Destiny, he stated that the safety of everyone there was his main concern. This leads him toward a tendency of self sacrificing which can be viewed as a death wish when viewed on its own. When falling back or retreating,Young makes a point to be the last one out to make sure no one is left behind. Like many military leaders he doesn't like losing people under his command or protection. However, he has willingly left someone behind before but he admits that was a compulsive and terrible mistake.
He's not a man to raise his voice unless truly angry. The majority of the time his demeanor is subdued, calm and thoughtful. He thinks before he speaks, with the exception of times when he is angry. He believes that remaining calm and thinking it through in any situation will help in the outcome. However, he has trouble following his own advice. He has a keen understanding of what is right and what should be done in many situations but when lets his emotions take hold, it blurs the lines of right and wrong.
His personal life is in shambles and is his own fault. While he does express that he loves his wife, he has cheated on her at least once. He had an affair with a woman under his command and even got her pregnant. This lends itself to his impulsive nature which becomes more obvious the further he is from responsibility.
History:
Young is career military. He enrolled in officer training not long after he finished high school. By all accounts he came from an average background prior to joining the military. He worked his way up to full bird Colonel in the U.S. Air Force, in what's described as an “impressive career.”
He worked at the SGC in command of an SG team, and later was assigned to a base on P2S-569(a planet). During his assignment on that planet, the base was attacked leaving 37 people dead. At least one of them bleeding out in front of him as he tired to help them.
Later, he took command of Icarus Base where the Ninth Chevron project was being carried out. He intended it to be his last command so he could spend more time with his wife. Then during his command of that base he became involved in an affair with an officer under his command. He did eventually break off the affair and tell his wife. Presumably, it was because of this trouble at home that he then turned down the offer to lead the expedition team through the gate should they succeed to dial the ninth chevron. That soon became a mute point when Icarus base was attacked(by who were assumed to be the Lucian Alliance.) and they were forced to flee through the gate. The gate was supposed to be dialed to Earth but one of the scientists, Dr. Rush, dialed the ninth chevron instead. Once dialed, they couldn't dial anywhere else. The address led them to an Ancient Ship, Destiny. Young was the last one through the gate as the planet Icarus base was on exploded. Young was literally flung from the wormhole and across the gateroom of Destiny. He sustained a serious head injury and was knocked unconscious for several hours.
When Young regained consciousness, and his ability to move, he was faced with the reality of survival. He was now in command of a rag-tag group of soldiers and civilians with limited resources on ship that was barely holding itself together. They got off to a rocky start with their lives being in danger the second they got on board the ship. Luckily the ship stopped and dialed a planet that would have what they needed to survive.
Things went as well as could be expected on a barely held together space ship flying through the unknown. When he wasn't presented with concerns about the basics needed for the crew to survive he was butting heads with Dr. Rush. They rarely saw eye to eye on anything. One such things was the Control Interface Chair they found. Young believed it to be too dangerous for anyone to sit in, as similar technology had proven to be fatal to humans in the past while Rush believed it could be handled by the human brain. This led to Rush planting the weapon a crew member used to kill himself in Young's quarters, thus framing Young for murder. The resulting inquiry and handing over of command bought Rush enough time to resume work on the chair. During that time someone sat in it and as a result, entered a vegetable like state.
Young confronted Rush about framing him while they were alone on a planet. This resulted in an actual physical fight between the two of them. When it became clear to Young that Rush would never stop undermining his authority and risking the lives of people on the ship, Young made an impulsive and rash decision and... left Rush behind on the planet. Upon returning to the ship Young reported that Rush was taken in a rock-slide, there was no time to check his story before the ship moved on.
Young immediately started to regret his decision the longer things went on without Rush but there was little he could do but cover up his own mistake, as there was no way back to the planet he left him on.
While using the Long Range Communication Stones(allows you to switch consciousnesses with another person.) to report back to Earth, he encountered a glitch that put him into a body of an alien on an alien ship that had been following Destiny. It was soon found out that these aliens were hostile. They attacked the ship and abducted Chloe from the ship. Young used the communication stones again, this time to find Chloe and help her escape. Instead of finding Chloe, Young found Rush being kept in a holding tank by the aliens. Young broke Rush out of the tank but without a way to communicate with the alien's body he couldn't explain what was going on. Rush used a device the aliens used on him to probe his mind to communicate with who he thought was an alien helping him. Rush was able to briefly see into Young's mind and find out why he was there. This also broke the connection with the stones. Back on Destiny, Young ordered them to fire on the alien ship. Despite that Rush was able to get both himself and Chloe off the ship and back on Destiny via one of the alien fighters.
Once back on the ship, Rush and Young came to a tenuous understanding that they would act like nothing ever happened, 'for the good of the crew.' However, it didn't quite work out that way as the civilians on the ship organized a mutiny and Rush played a large part in it. Young was able to resolve the situation with no loss of life. Afterwords Young ordered the military personnel to make a 'special effort' to mend fences with the civilians. Young also made his own special effort, despite being clearly uncomfortable with the idea.
After that, things got back to the closest thing to normal that ship gets. They visited a few planets, collected supplies, crossed the space between two galaxies. Normal run-of-the-mill stuff for a million year old space ship. Until they discovered just who the was who leaked the information to the Lucian Alliance which led to the attack on Icarus Base. Rush convinced Young to allow him to use the communication stones to switch consciousness with the spy, Colonel Telford. After that, things got very out of hand, resulting in Rush being captured by the Lucian Alliance and forced to attempt to make another connection to Destiny from another Icarus-type planet. This led to an incursion by a Lucian Alliance force. The ensuing clash between groups didn't go very well at all and then they find out they all will die if they don't boost the ship's shield. Eventually this led to them surrendering to the invaders in order to save everyone's lives.
Two of Young's people went outside the ship to boost the shields, while they were out there all hell broke lose on the ship when the Lucian Alliance commander, Kiva, was shot. The new person who took command blamed the military personnel. He refused to allow the two people who boosted the shield back inside and seemed intent on killing all the military personnel. It is at that point Young is taken. Right after receiving a rather vicious blow.
Sample Journal Entry:
Look, I get the feeling you people hear this kind of thing all the time but I need to get back. There are lives at stake. I need a weapon and I need a way back before they k--I need a way back and I need it now.
I can't be here. There are people back on that ship that need help and I can't be here.
Sample Log : At least three paragraphs, please.
“Lower the damn shield!” He had barely gotten those words out when a blunt, sharp pain registered across his face. His brain caught up with happened. The bastard hit him. So, that's how it gonna be. They were going to let his people die and given the reaction he just got, he was starting to think they were going to just kill them all and be done with it.
They had pulled him back to his feet when suddenly he felt the weight of their hands gone. That action, or rather, lack of action brought his gaze up from the floor. The walls were different. They were gone and not just them, Camille had also vanished. The thought crossed his mind that maybe he'd been hit harder than he thought. Hell, he was probably out cold on floor of the corridor back on Destiny.
Movement caught his eye and he turned his head. A familiar floating orb was hovering near by, a Kino. He took a hurried look around expecting to see Eli or Riley, they were usually the ones behind the controls. When he saw neither he looked back to the Kino. It occurred to him to feel his tac vest, they had taken his radio, his weapons but he felt a weight in one of the pockets. Upon investigation it proved to be a Kino remote, which... doesn't do him much good, he barely knew how to run the things as is.
“Okay,” he said to himself. Okay, he repeated internally. Just need to figure this out. He's not on Destiny, that much was obvious. So, where was he?
Notes: um, hi?
